Upcoming Print Collection

Soon and very soon I plan to release a print collection based on some southern favorites: Chinoserie, Spanish Moss, Blue & White, and even some Aerial Oceans. That’s right, I heard ya’ll loud and clear when you voted, hands down, for some aerial oceans. I’m so excited to be bringing all of this to fruition.

WHEN

My commissions wrap up the end of March and I hope to be opening my print shop at the beginning of April (No set date yet) and plan to add the originals to my online shop as well. Lots of fun updates are in the works, and I can’t wait to bring you along!

Why Chinoiserie?

As a textural artist, I wasn’t sure how to bridge the gap between my originals & prints, as my textured pieces cast shadows that made my “print version” essentially just resemble a photograph-not what I’m going for. I wanted to create a special line that would print gorgeously while at the same time remain true to my modern coastal aesthetics. I also think a dedicated print line allows my for original, textural works to remain uniquely special and one-of-a-kind pieces that I will continue to make!

In researching southern traditions & design, I kept coming back to Chinoiserie. I dug into it a bit and it is a french term used to describe a European interpretation of traditional Chinese & Japanese brush art. It was also tied to, and included the Rococo style of art, significant to the Baroque period. During the 17th & 18th century, trade with China began and The British East India Company was the main source of trading with East Asia. As one would expect, Chinoiserie sort of had it’s debut, if you will, during tea time. It only grew in its popularity and interpretation and over much time ( and how it happened, I do not know) the South in the United States fell in love with this whimsical, bold and elegant style. It is most often found in ginger jars, porcelain vases and wall panels & wall paper. My aim was to incorporate watercolors in limited color palates to bring a “flair” of Chinoiserie into my prints, but focusing on true southern imagery such as Spanish Moss, Live Oaks, Magnolias and more.

All my best-

Amy Marcy
